The Black Murex Seashell with Assorted Tillandsia Air Plant pairs a striking natural shell with one of the world's most adaptable houseplants. Tillandsia, commonly called air plants, belong to the bromeliad family and are native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. They are epiphytes by nature, meaning they anchor themselves to surfaces in the wild rather than growing in soil, which makes them uniquely suited to display in decorative vessels like shells.
The Black Murex shell is a sculptural, spiky ocean shell with deep ridges and a dark, dramatic coloring that contrasts beautifully against the silvery-green rosette of the air plant nestled inside. Tillandsia leaves are slender, arching, and covered in tiny trichomes that give them a soft, frosted texture. Depending on the assorted variety included, the plant may range from compact and globe-shaped to long and wispy. The combination creates a one-of-a-kind living arrangement that looks equally striking on a windowsill, bookshelf, or as a centerpiece.
This arrangement makes a thoughtful gift and a charming accent for any indoor space, from home offices and living rooms to bathrooms with good natural light. Tillandsia air plants are pet friendly, making them a great choice for households with cats and dogs. Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place the shell near a south- or east-facing window where the plant receives several hours of filtered sunlight daily. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves, but also avoid deep shade, which will slow growth and reduce the chance of blooming.
Water your air plant by misting it thoroughly two to three times per week, or by submerging it in a bowl of room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off any excess water and allow the plant to dry upside down before returning it to the shell. Sitting in standing water will cause rot, so always ensure the base is fully dry before placing it back in the display.
Air plants prefer temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and do well in the typical indoor humidity found in most homes. They appreciate good air circulation, so avoid placing them in completely sealed terrariums. A light misting on dry days or placement in a naturally humid room like a kitchen or bathroom with a window will help them stay healthy and vibrant.
Feed your Tillandsia once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength. Add it to your misting water or soaking water during a regular watering session. Fertilizing encourages healthy growth and can promote the beautiful bloom that air plants produce once in their lifetime.
