  •   Sansevieria Ocean Star, also called the bird's nest snake plant, is a compact dwarf cultivar in the Asparagaceae family native to tropical West Africa. It grows as a low, rosette-forming succulent with stiff, sword-shaped leaves that fan out from a central base.

The leaves are short and broad, tapering to a firm point, and range from deep green to gray-green with lighter horizontal banding across the surface. Each leaf has a slightly concave face and a waxy texture that catches light. Ocean Star stays low and dense, with the rosette rarely exceeding eight to ten inches in height, fitting neatly into small pots on desks or shelves.

Flower information for this cultivar is limited and unconfirmed, so the focus here is on its other standout traits. Ocean Star filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor air and releases oxygen at night rather than during the day. It also survives up to ten days without water, useful when the house is empty for an extended stretch.

Move it outside for summer, but position it under a covered patio or overhang since the leaves are sensitive to direct rain pooling at the base. It grows under standard office LED lighting without issue, though it does best away from the direct blast of air conditioning vents or heating units. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and small children.

  •   Sansevieria Ocean Star grows well in bright indirect light, medium light, and even under office LED panels.

It needs watering every ten to fourteen days, allowing the soil to dry out fully between waterings.

Ocean Star does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix combined with perlite for added aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and tolerates dry heated indoor air but suffers near cold drafts or direct AC airflow.

Ocean Star is a slow grower, reaching roughly eight to ten inches at maturity; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F with brief exposure only. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and along the Gulf Coast. It also grows outdoors in parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest where winters stay mild.
  • Q: How often should I water Sansevieria Ocean Star?
A: Let the soil dry out completely before watering again. If the leaves look slightly soft or the soil has been dry for more than two weeks, it is ready for a drink.

Q: Does it need a lot of light to grow well?
A: Sansevieria Ocean Star adapts to a range of indoor conditions. A north- or east-facing window works well, and it can sit several feet from a window without issue. Avoid placing it directly in a south-facing window, where the leaves can scorch.

Q: Is Ocean Star safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap also causes irritation to paws and skin on contact, so a high shelf is the safest placement.

Q: How big does this plant get?
A: Ocean Star stays compact, typically reaching eight to ten inches tall and spreading to a similar width as the rosette matures.

Q: Can Ocean Star go outside in summer?
A: Yes, move it outdoors once nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F. Keep it under cover where rain cannot pool at the base or soak the rosette directly.

Q: How does this plant help indoor air quality?
A: Ocean Star filters formaldehyde and other common indoor toxins from the air and releases oxygen at night, continuing to exchange air while you sleep.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
