  •   Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum raddianum) is a feathery, forest-floor fern native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, where it grows naturally in humid, shaded environments. It belongs to the family Pteridaceae and has been cultivated as a houseplant for decades, with heirloom specimens passing through generations of plant lovers.

The fronds are made up of small, fan-shaped leaflets in forest green, each one held on a wiry, near-black stem that keeps them suspended in a soft, layered arrangement. The foliage is lacy in texture, with a fine, almost translucent quality to each leaflet. Fronds arch outward from the center and can reach 12 to 18 inches in length on a mature plant.

Maidenhair Fern does not produce flowers, but it has a long history of both edible and medicinal use across cultures, with the fronds used in herbal preparations. It also purifies indoor air and naturally humidifies the space around it as moisture evaporates from its fronds throughout the day.

Maidenhair Fern is pet friendly, so it can sit on a low shelf, in a terrarium, or on the floor without concern for animals nearby. It works particularly well in a hanging basket, where the arching fronds can spread without obstruction, and the kitchen is a natural home for it since ambient cooking moisture keeps the air humid. This fern is sensitive to being moved, so once you find a spot it settles into, leave it there. Rotate it every few weeks in place so all sides receive even light. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, and pull it under cover when rain is in the forecast if you move it outside for summer.

  •   Maidenhair Fern grows best in bright indirect light, such as a north- or east-facing window.

It needs evenly moist soil; water two to three times per week, never letting the roots dry out completely.

Maidenhair Fern does best in a well-draining, peat-based or coco coir mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and suffers in anything below 55°F.

Maidenhair Fern grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once a month in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F to 35°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of coastal Texas and Louisiana. It also does well outdoors seasonally in zones 8 and 9, including Georgia, South Carolina, and the Pacific Northwest, when brought in before first frost.
  • Q: Is Maidenhair Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is considered pet friendly.

Q: Why are the fronds turning brown and crispy?
A: Maidenhair Fern most often browns when the air is too dry or when it sits near an AC or heating vent. Move it to a more humid spot, such as a bathroom or kitchen, and check that no draft is hitting the foliage.

Q: How do I know when Maidenhair Fern needs water?
A: The fronds wilt slightly and the stems go limp when the soil has dried out too much. Check the top inch of soil and water as soon as it begins to feel dry.

Q: Can this fern grow in a terrarium?
A: Maidenhair Fern is well suited to terrariums because the enclosed environment holds the high humidity it needs naturally.

Q: Can Maidenhair Fern grow under office LED lights?
A: It can manage under bright LED grow lights or strong overhead office lighting, though frond color stays truest with natural indirect light from a window nearby.

Q: How do I avoid killing it when I first bring it home?
A: Maidenhair Fern is sensitive to being moved, so expect some frond drop in the first week or two after it arrives. Keep it in one spot, away from vents and drafts, and maintain consistent moisture while it adjusts.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
