  •   Succulent Gasteria Durban (Gasteria sp. 'Durban') is a compact succulent in the Asphodelaceae family, native to the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. It grows naturally in rocky, shaded outcrops where rainfall is seasonal and soils are fast-draining.

The leaves are thick, tongue-shaped, and arranged in a tight rosette or stacked two-ranked formation. They are dark green with white speckled markings across the surface, and the edges have a slightly rough texture. Gasteria Durban stays compact, typically reaching 4 to 6 inches across at maturity.

It produces tubular, pendant flowers on a tall slender stem in late winter to spring. The blooms are coral-pink to orange-red, sometimes with green tips, and appear reliably when the plant receives a slight drop in nighttime temperatures during the cooler months. Gasteria Durban is pet-friendly, so it sits safely on low shelves, tables, or anywhere in a shared home.

Grow it in a terrarium or on a desk under office LED lighting and it performs without any need for natural sunlight. You can move it outside for summer, though it needs cover from rain to prevent root rot and should be kept out of direct afternoon sun to avoid leaf scorch. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as the directed airflow causes stress, though it does tolerate the general dry heated air of indoor spaces in winter. You can leave it up to ten days without water, useful for travel or stretches between watering.

  •   Succulent Gasteria Durban grows well in bright indirect light or medium light, including under standard office LED fixtures.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Gasteria Durban does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix, with added perlite for extra drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from cold drafts below 50°F.

Gasteria Durban is a slow-growing succulent; feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and along the Gulf Coast states. It also does well outside in South Carolina and Georgia during the warmer months, and in sheltered spots in Nevada and New Mexico.
  • Q: Is Succulent Gasteria Durban safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does this plant need?
A: Succulent Gasteria Durban does well a few feet back from an east or north-facing window, or directly under office LED lighting. A south-facing window with direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.

Q: How do I know when Gasteria Durban needs water?
A: The leaves wilt slightly and feel less firm when the soil has been dry long enough. Check the top inch or two of soil before watering.

Q: Can this plant go outside in summer?
A: Gasteria Durban handles outdoor placement in summer in a shaded or partially shaded spot. Keep it under a covered area or roof overhang since prolonged exposure to rain can cause root rot.

Q: Does Gasteria Durban need to be rotated?
A: Rotating it a quarter turn every few weeks helps the rosette develop evenly on all sides, especially in indoor spots where light comes from one direction.

Q: What happens if this plant is overwatered?
A: Gasteria Durban develops soft, mushy leaves at the base and the roots begin to rot when watered too frequently. Always let the soil dry out completely before the next watering.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
