  •   Adenia Volkensii is a rare caudiciform succulent native to the dry savannas of East Africa, particularly Tanzania and Kenya. This succulent belongs to the Passifloraceae family and grows naturally in rocky, well-drained soils with extended dry seasons. It has a sculptural caudex and low maintenance care requirements.

The plant's most distinctive feature is its swollen, bottle-shaped caudex that stores water and gives it a geometric silhouette. Upright vining stems emerge from the caudex with bright green, lobed leaves that have a clean, tropical appearance. The dramatic contrast between the pale, swollen base and the bright green foliage above makes it recognizable among rare caudex plants.

Adenia Volkensii can produce small, inconspicuous flowers, though indoor blooming is uncommon and not guaranteed. It is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers appear on separate plants. The caudex slowly expands over years.

Move it outside for summer to soak up full sun, which encourages strong caudex development. Provide cover from rain to prevent caudex rot. Heavy pots are important since the plant develops deep roots. Keep it on a high shelf or well out of reach, as cats, dogs, and small children should not nibble or handle it, and the sap can cause skin irritation on contact. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Adenia Volkensii grows well in bright indirect light to full sun, though south-facing windows may scorch leaves during peak summer heat.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter as the caudex stores water reserves.

Adenia Volkensii does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite or pumice at a 50/50 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 60-95°F and should be brought indoors before nights drop below 50°F.

Adenia Volkensii is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a balanced, diluted fertilizer applied once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 and 12, where temperatures rarely dip below 40°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and the southernmost tips of Florida, including Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys, as well as parts of southern California like Palm Springs and the Imperial Valley. Gardeners in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and other warm states should keep it in containers so it can move indoors when cooler weather arrives.
  • Q: How often should I water Adenia Volkensii?
A: Water deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, then once a month or less in winter. The caudex wilts visibly when it needs water.

Q: Is the sap toxic to pets?
A: Adenia Volkensii sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf away from cats and dogs.

Q: Which window direction works best for Adenia Volkensii?
A: A south-facing window offers the strongest light, but east or west-facing windows work well too. Rotate it regularly so all sides receive even light and grow symmetrically.

Q: How big does it get over time?
A: Adenia Volkensii grows upright and can reach several feet in height over many years, with the caudex slowly expanding as the plant matures.

Q: Can Adenia Volkensii survive a trip without watering?
A: An established plant can go up to ten days without water since the caudex stores reserves. Young plants need more frequent watering.

Q: Is it suitable for beginners?
A: Adenia Volkensii tolerates drought, dry indoor air, and some neglect. Use well-draining soil, avoid overwatering, and provide plenty of light.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
