  •   Tradescantia 'Nanouk', also called Fantasy Venice, is a fast-growing trailing houseplant in the Commelinaceae family, bred in the Netherlands as a compact, heavily variegated cultivar of Tradescantia albiflora. It produces long, cascading stems and holds some of the most saturated leaf color of any spiderwort variety available for indoor growing.

Each leaf is oval and slightly waxy, measuring roughly 1 to 2 inches long, with stripes of green, white, and pink running along the surface and a solid purple-pink underside. The stems grow quickly and trail outward from the pot, eventually reaching 12 to 24 inches in length. New growth tends to be the most pink-saturated, fading slightly toward green as leaves mature in lower light.

Fantasy Venice Tradescantia produces small, three-petaled flowers in white to pale pink, typically appearing in spring and summer when the plant receives good light. The blooms are modest in size but appear regularly along the stem tips during the active growing season. It also grows well near a kitchen sink or window where ambient moisture from cooking and washing is present.

Hang Fantasy Venice Tradescantia in a basket near a bright window and rotate the pot a quarter turn each week so all sides receive even light exposure. Move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 55°F, but keep it sheltered from direct rainfall, which can waterlog the soil and damage the leaves. Cats, dogs, and other pets shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact, so a high shelf or hanging hook works well for households with animals or small children.

  •   Tradescantia 'Nanouk' grows best in bright indirect light, about 2 to 3 feet from an east- or west-facing window.

It needs watering every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Fantasy Venice Tradescantia does best in a well-draining potting mix, such as standard indoor mix combined with perlite at a 2:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should stay away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

Fantasy Venice Tradescantia is a fast grower, putting out new stems and leaves quickly, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, and parts of Arizona and Louisiana. In cooler zones, it performs as an indoor trailing houseplant year-round.
  • Q: How much light does Tradescantia 'Nanouk' need?
A: Place it close to an east- or west-facing window where it gets plenty of bright, indirect light. A south-facing window can scorch the leaves, and the pink tones fade noticeably in low light.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Tradescantia 'Nanouk' wilts slightly and the stems feel less firm when the soil has dried out too long. Overwatering is more common than underwatering and shows up as yellowing lower leaves and mushy stems at the base.

Q: Is Fantasy Venice Tradescantia safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it. The sap can also irritate paws and skin on contact, so keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket out of reach.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Fantasy Venice Tradescantia roots easily from stem cuttings. Snip a section with at least one or two nodes, place it in water or moist soil, and roots typically form within one to two weeks.

Q: Can Fantasy Venice Tradescantia grow under artificial light?
A: It grows well under bright office LEDs or grow lights placed 6 to 12 inches above the foliage, though the pink and purple tones are most pronounced with natural window light.

Q: How large does this plant get?
A: Fantasy Venice Tradescantia trails to about 12 to 24 inches as the stems lengthen, and individual leaves stay between 1 and 2 inches wide, so the overall spread depends on how often it is trimmed back.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
