  •   Sempervivum Red Lion is a hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. It evolved in rocky, well-drained alpine terrain where it endures harsh conditions and frost with ease.

It forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves in deep red and burgundy tones, often edged with subtle green. Sun exposure intensifies the leaf color to deep jewel tones. True to its clustering growth style, the plant spreads by producing offsets around the base, gradually forming a dense mat of rosettes.

Sempervivum 'Red Lion' is monocarpic, meaning individual rosettes flower once before making way for their offsets. A cool nighttime temperature drop triggers the bloom cycle, so placing it outdoors in autumn naturally encourages flowering.

It fits rock gardens, alpine troughs, containers, balcony planters, and windowsill displays. It handles balcony wind and rain without trouble, though some shelter from prolonged heavy moisture helps prevent waterlogged roots. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant grows 2 inches tall and spreads gradually.

  •   Sempervivum Red Lion grows well in partial sun to full sun, requiring at least four to six hours of direct light daily for the deepest color.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days indoors.

Sempervivum 'Red Lion' does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F up to 85°F, with exceptional frost tolerance in most climates.

Sempervivum 'Red Lion' is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, though a light, diluted succulent feed once in spring supports healthy offset production.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to around negative 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, and Delaware. It also performs well in the milder zones of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, California, Nevada, and Arizona.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum Red Lion?
A: Water deeply and then let the soil dry completely between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot far more quickly than drought does.

Q: Is it safe around cats and dogs?
A: Sempervivum Red Lion is non-toxic and poses no risk to pets.

Q: Does Sempervivum 'Red Lion' need direct sun to develop its red color?
A: Full sun brings out the deepest burgundy tones, though it still colors nicely in partial sun with four or more hours of direct light daily.

    Q: How does it multiply?
A: Sempervivum 'Red Lion' produces small offsets, called chicks, around the base of the mother rosette. Simply detach a rooted offset and plant it in fresh, well-draining soil.

Q: Will Sempervivum 'Red Lion' survive a week without watering?
A: Up to ten days easily if watered before you leave and given good drainage.

Q: What zones allow outdoor winter growing?
A: Sempervivum 'Red Lion' survives winter outdoors in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating temperatures to negative 30°F and remaining green year-round in most of those regions.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
