  •   Pteris Cretica 'Albo Fern', also called Silver Ribbon Fern, is a variegated fern in the Pteridaceae family native to tropical and subtropical regions across Europe, Asia, and Africa. It grows naturally in rocky woodland floors and shaded ravines where humidity stays consistently high.

The fronds are long, arching, and pinnate, with narrow lance-shaped leaflets running in opposite pairs along each stem. Each leaflet carries a broad white or pale cream stripe down the center, flanked by mid-green edges on either side. Silver Ribbon Fern stays relatively compact, spreading outward in a loose, open habit rather than growing tall.

Ferns in the Pteris genus reproduce through spores rather than flowers, so Silver Ribbon Fern produces no blooms. Spore cases appear as brown lines along the underside margins of mature fronds. It is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins while naturally humidifying the surrounding air.

Move it outside for the summer months in a sheltered, shaded spot, and bring it back indoors before temperatures drop in autumn. Silver Ribbon Fern fits well in terrariums where humidity stays naturally high, and it also does well near a kitchen sink where ambient moisture is consistent. Keep it away from heating vents and air conditioning units, as dry or blowing air causes the frond tips to brown. It is sensitive to being moved between different conditions, so settle on a stable location and leave it there as long as possible.

  •   Pteris Cretica 'Albo Fern' grows best in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure, especially south-facing windows.

It needs watering when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every five to seven days in warm months.

Silver Ribbon Fern does best in a well-draining, peat-based or coco coir mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and suffers below 50°F.

Silver Ribbon Fern is a moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. It also grows outside through the warmer months across zone 8 states including Oregon, Washington, and North Carolina.
  • Q: Does Pteris Cretica 'Albo Fern' need high humidity indoors?
A: Yes, it does best when humidity stays above 50 percent. A pebble tray with water, a humidifier nearby, or placement in a terrarium all help maintain that level.

Q: Why are the frond tips on my fern turning brown?
A: Pteris Cretica 'Albo Fern' is sensitive to dry air from heating and air conditioning vents. Move it away from any direct airflow and check that the soil is not drying out completely between waterings.

Q: Is Silver Ribbon Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Silver Ribbon Fern wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

Q: Can Silver Ribbon Fern grow in a terrarium?
A: It works well in a terrarium because the enclosed environment holds the moisture and humidity the plant needs consistently.

Q: What happens if I keep moving the plant to different spots?
A: Silver Ribbon Fern is sensitive to being relocated. Repeated changes in light, temperature, or humidity cause stress and can lead to frond drop or browning. Pick a stable spot and keep it there.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
