  •   Fern Lemon Button (Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffii'), also called the Button Fern, is a compact tropical fern native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. It belongs to the Lomariopsidaceae family and grows naturally on forest floors and rocky slopes where moisture and filtered light are constant.

The leaves are small, rounded, and arranged along arching fronds that typically reach six to twelve inches long. Each leaflet is shaped like a tiny button, bright green, and closely spaced along the midrib. The fronds grow in a dense, mounding habit that stays tidy without pruning.

Ferns in this genus do not produce flowers. Instead, Lemon Button Fern reproduces through spores that form on the undersides of mature fronds in small, dot-like clusters. It also purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other toxins, and it naturally releases moisture into the surrounding air.

This plant is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs. Place it in a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture is higher, or use it in a closed or open terrarium where humidity stays consistent. You can move it outside in summer to a shaded or semi-shaded spot, though it needs cover from rain to avoid waterlogged soil. Rotate the pot regularly so all sides of the plant receive even light from your indoor source.

  •   Fern Lemon Button grows well under bright indirect light, including standard office LED fixtures.

Water it every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Lemon Button Fern does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning or heating vents.

Lemon Button Fern is a slow to moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F with protection. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, Hawaii, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also stay outside through autumn in zone 8 areas before temperatures drop too low.
  • Q: Is Fern Lemon Button safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Fern Lemon Button wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too long, so check the top inch of soil before watering.

Q: What window direction works best for Lemon Button Fern?
A: East or north-facing windows work well. South-facing windows can scorch the fronds, so keep it back from any window that receives direct afternoon sun.

Q: How large does it get indoors?
A: Lemon Button Fern typically stays between six and twelve inches tall and wide indoors, spreading slowly over time.

Q: Can Lemon Button Fern grow in a terrarium?
A: Yes, the compact size and high humidity requirement make it well suited for closed or open terrariums.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: Lemon Button Fern develops yellowing fronds and mushy base stems when the roots sit in consistently wet soil, which can lead to root rot.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
