  •   Green Ivy Plant, also called English Ivy, is a fast-growing trailing vine in the Araliaceae family (Hedera helix) native to Europe and western Asia. It has naturalized across much of North America and has been grown indoors for decades as a hanging basket plant and trailing vine indoor.

The leaves are small, lobed, and waxy, typically spanning two to four inches, with three to five pointed lobes on each leaf. They grow in a deep, dark green with pale green veining along the surface. English Ivy sends out long, flexible stems that extend several feet, climbing or trailing depending on how it is positioned.

Indoors, it rarely flowers, and blooms are not a feature of English Ivy grown as a houseplant. What it does consistently offer is air-purifying activity, filtering formaldehyde and other toxins from indoor spaces. It also thrives near kitchen moisture, where humidity levels tend to stay higher than in the rest of the home.

A hanging hook lets the stems trail downward naturally, and rotating the pot every week or two keeps growth even on all sides. Move it outside for summer once temperatures stay reliably above 45°F, and bring it back in before the first frost. Cats, dogs, and small children should be kept away from it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if ingested. Keep it on a high shelf or in a spot that stays out of reach.

  •   Green Ivy Plant grows well under medium to bright indirect light, including office LED setups.

It needs water every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

English Ivy does best in well-draining potting mix with added perlite to prevent soggy roots.

It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold air from AC vents or heaters.

English Ivy grows at a moderate to fast pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating brief dips to around -30°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Oregon, Washington, and much of the Pacific Northwest and mid-Atlantic regions. It also persists outdoors through autumn in the Midwest and parts of the Northeast, including Illinois, Ohio, and New York, where winters stay within its range.
  • Q: Is Green Ivy Plant safe for pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can irritate skin and paws on contact. Keep it on a high shelf, well away from small children too.

Q: How much light does this plant actually need?
A: Green Ivy Plant grows under office fluorescent and LED lights without trouble. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves, so keep it a few feet back or in a north- or east-facing window instead.

Q: How do I know when English Ivy needs water?
A: It wilts slightly and the leaves lose a little firmness when the soil has dried out. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than going by schedule alone.

Q: Can I take this plant outside in summer?
A: English Ivy handles outdoor placement well once nighttime temperatures stay above 45°F. Bring it back inside before the first autumn frost and keep it away from direct afternoon sun outdoors.

Q: How do I propagate English Ivy?
A: Snip a stem just below a leaf node, remove the lower leaves, and place the cutting in water or moist soil. Roots typically form within two to four weeks.

Q: Does this plant actually clean the air?
A: English Ivy filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor environments. It is one of the more studied houseplants for this trait, based on NASA's clean air research.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
