  •   Lapidaria margaretae, also called Karoo Rose, is a rare succulent native to the arid Namaqualand and Bushmanland regions of South Africa and Namibia, where it grows among quartz rocks in the Karoo desert. This collector plant belongs to the Aizoaceae family and is the single species in its monotypic genus Lapidaria. Its extraordinary resemblance to polished stone makes it highly sought-after among living stone succulents available worldwide.

The plant forms tight, clumping rosettes of chunky, triangular leaves that are pale grey-green to silvery-white with a smooth, almost chalky surface and subtly keeled edges. Each leaf pair is thick and firm, giving it a sculptural appearance that feels more like a natural mineral formation than a living plant. Over time, it produces a low, dense mound of rosettes.

It blooms in autumn, producing bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers up to 4 cm across that emerge from the center of the rosette. Blooms typically appear once yearly and require a nighttime temperature drop to trigger flowering. The flowers produce pollen, so keep this in mind if you have seasonal allergies.

This drought tolerant succulent is slow-growing and can become a true heirloom over decades. Display it on a high shelf or bright windowsill well away from small children and pets, as its sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. It tolerates dry heated indoor air well but dislikes direct airflow from AC or heaters. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant is sensitive to being moved frequently, so choose its location with care.

  •   Karoo Rose Lapidaria margaretae Cactus grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun with at least 4-6 hours of direct light daily.

Water it sparingly, roughly every 2-3 weeks in summer and only once a month or less in winter.

Lapidaria margaretae does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of 50% coarse sand or perlite combined with 50% cactus or succulent soil.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and is not frost tolerant below 25°F.

Lapidaria margaretae is a slow grower and needs no regular fertilizing, though a diluted succulent feed once in spring can support healthy growth.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best with frost protection. It grows outdoors in warm, dry climates across California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also spend summers outside in Oregon's coastal regions and sheltered spots in New Mexico and parts of Arkansas, though it should be brought indoors before any frost arrives.
  • Q: How often should I water Karoo Rose Lapidaria margaretae Cactus?
A: Check the soil between waterings. Allow it to dry out completely before watering again; overwatering causes root rot far more quickly than underwatering.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Karoo Rose Lapidaria margaretae Cactus has sap that can cause skin and paw irritation, so place it on a high shelf away from cats, dogs, and small children. Contact your vet if ingestion is suspected.

Q: How fast does Lapidaria margaretae grow?
A: It grows slowly, adding new rosettes gradually over years.

    Q: Can it be propagated?
A: Lapidaria margaretae propagates easily from offsets. Gently separate them from the clumping base during the growing season, let them callous for a day or two, then place in dry, gritty succulent mix.

Q: Why are the leaves on Karoo Rose turning yellow?
A: Yellowing usually signals overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering, improve soil drainage, and verify the pot has adequate drainage holes.

Q: Does it need outdoor time in summer?
A: Karoo Rose can move outside for summer in warm, dry climates, but needs cover from rain and shelter from heavy afternoon sun. Limit transitions since it dislikes being moved frequently.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
